Introducing our new Trainee Surveyor, Rhys!

With a growing number of customers and homes, we know we need to grow and train our teams, too. In the last financial year, we welcomed 32 new people to Llanw, including trainees and six apprentices. We recognise the importance of investing in Bridgend’s young people, giving them hands-on experience and enabling them to contribute to their community.

So, we’d like to introduce you to our newest trainee, Rhys, who has recently stepped into a Trainee Surveyor role with us. We caught up with him to see how it’s going so far:

“I applied for the Trainee Surveyor role because it ties in perfectly with my academic interests and my long-term career ambitions. I’ve always enjoyed mathematics and engineering, especially the practical problem-solving side of them and quantity surveying feels like the ideal way to apply those skills in real-world projects.

“When I found out that Llanw were offering the chance to earn while I learn, gain industry experience, and complete my degree with no university debt, it felt like the perfect opportunity.

“During my training, I’m most looking forward to understanding how construction projects are costed, managed, and delivered successfully. I’m particularly interested in analysing project data, preparing accurate estimates, and applying measurement techniques. These areas let me use my strengths in maths in a practical and meaningful way, and I’m excited to keep building on that as I progress.”

“Growing up in Maesteg, it means a lot to develop my skills in a company that understands the community”

Rhys continued:

“As an 18-year-old just beginning my career, it’s exciting and reassuring to be starting with a local organisation. Growing up in Maesteg, it means a lot to develop my skills in a company that understands the local community and the projects that matter to it. I feel proud to begin my career somewhere that supports my development while allowing me to stay connected to the place I know best.

“One of the most interesting parts of my rotation so far has been spending time with the Development Team. They took me to a new-build site in Porth that was in its final stages. I was surprised by just how much detail goes into even the smallest elements of a project. The team explained how closely they have to work to keep up with building regulations and ensure safety on site.

“I also learned how important progress meetings are to make sure sites stay on budget and are ready for handover as smoothly and quickly as possible. It gave me a real appreciation for the level of planning and accuracy involved in their work.

“Over the next few years, my goal is to build a solid foundation of technical knowledge and hands-on experience. I want to become confident in measurement, cost estimation, budgeting, and supporting the wider team’s work effectively.

“I aim to contribute meaningfully to the organisation while developing into a well-rounded, capable Quantity Surveyor.”

Welcome to the team Rhys!
